How To Interact With Multiple People Using Group FaceTime

Distances have narrowed thanks to the video calling features that are supported in our mobile phones. With video calls, users can seamlessly keep in touch with their near and dear ones. 

For iPhone users, FaceTime is a great tool for making video calls. The feature also allows multiple people to communicate in a single call. Group FaceTime allows multiple people to chat at the same time. 

You can start a Group FaceTime from the FaceTime app or from a group conversation in the Messages app – and you can add up to 32 people at a time.

In this article, we will guide you on how to use the Group FaceTime feature for video calls. 

Note: To use Group FaceTime video calls, you need iOS 12.1.4 or later, or iPadOS on one of these devices; iPhone 6s or later, iPad Pro or later, iPad Air 2 or later, iPad mini 4 or later, iPad (5th generation) or later, or iPod touch (7th generation). 

Earlier models of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that support iOS 12.1.4 can join Group FaceTime calls as audio participants.

How to start a Group FaceTime call from the FaceTime app

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > FaceTime, and make sure FaceTime is on.
  2. Open FaceTime and tap New FaceTime.
  3. Enter the contacts you want to call.
  4. Tap the Audio button or FaceTime.

How to start a Group FaceTime call from the Messages app

  1. Open Messages app and start a group conversation. Or go to an existing group conversation.
  2. Tap the FaceTime button in the top right-hand corner.
  3. Tap FaceTime Audio or FaceTime Video.

How to join a Group FaceTime call

You can join a Group FaceTime call that someone else started in the following ways.

From a notification: Tap the notification from the Notification Centre or the Lock Screen, then tap the FaceTime button.

From a group message: Join a Group FaceTime call from Messages. Tap the notification at the top of your screen or tap Join from the group conversation in Messages. After you tap Join, you’re connected automatically.

From the FaceTime app: To join a call from the FaceTime app, go to the active call in FaceTime, then tap the FaceTime button

How to add a contact to a Group FaceTime call

  1. From the call, tap the participants at the top of the screen, then tap Add People.
  2. Enter the contact’s name, phone number or email address.
  3. Tap Add People.

When you add someone to your call, you can tap Ring next to their name so their device alerts them again of the incoming call.

Note: When someone is added to a Group FaceTime call, they can’t be removed from the call. That person can leave the call only by ending the Group FaceTime call on their own device.
