Elon Musk-owned SpaceX and T-Mobile are currently testing the Starlink cell network after receiving the approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in November 2024.
Initially, the feature will support texting, with voice and data services to be added later.

Compatible iPhones
The new feature will be available on iPhones running on iOS 18.3.
After updating to iOS 18.3, iPhone users will see a new toggle switch in the cellular data settings of their smartphone to control the new satellite feature.
Availability
T-Mobile has started enrolling consumers for an early version of the Starlink service, with a beta test this week. Users with compatible iPhones can now sign up for it. The beta program is open and free for all T-Mobile postpaid voice customers.
The initial users received text messages from T-Mobile that said, “You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”

The Tripartite Collaboration
The FCC gave a nod to SpaceX’s use of Starlink satellites to provide direct-to-phone service for T-Mobile customers, marking the first collaboration of its kind between a satellite operator and a wireless carrier.
The effort is aimed at eliminating internet dead zones in remote areas direct-to-cell capability to provide cellphone coverage in areas of North Carolina hard hit by Hurricane Helene.
T-Mobile had earlier specified that only Samsung Electronics Co. phones, such as the Z Fold and S24 models, would be linked to Starlink. However, Apple has come into the picture now.
Meanwhile, Apple provides a Globalstar Inc. that allows users to send texts and contact emergency responders when out of cellular range.
