Google to End Chrome Updates For Older Android Phones

Google to End Chrome Updates For Older Android Phones: Google has announced that it will soon stop updating the Chrome browser for phones running on Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie).

Google Ends Chrome Updates for Android 8 and 9

On its support page, Google said that Chrome version 138 will be the last update for users with these Android versions. To get the next update – Chrome version 139, coming on August 5 – users will need to upgrade to at least Android 10.0.

Phones with Android Oreo and Pie were mostly released between 2017 and 2019. Right now, about 9.8% of Android phones still use these older versions. This includes some early models like the Google Pixel, Pixel 3XL, Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus, OnePlus 5/5T, and others.

In comparison, around 10.2% of phones still use Android 10 (Q). This means Chrome will likely keep working and getting updates on Android 10 for at least a few more years, as long as the version remains popular.

Chrome Will Still Work, But Without New Updates

Google also said that while Chrome will continue to work normally on Android 8 and 9, it will no longer get any new updates.

Google suggests that users with older phones should update to Android 10 or a newer version if they can. If you’re not sure whether this change affects you, you can check your Android phones version by going to Settings and then tapping on About phone or System updates.

Android 16 Brings New Features and Design

It’s normal for companies to stop updating older software so they can focus on improving newer versions. With the recent release of Android 16, which brings features like the new Material 3 Expressive design, it’s a good idea to upgrade to a phone that supports newer Android phones versions.

This way, you’ll keep getting the latest updates and features – even though Android 10 is currently the minimum version needed for Chrome updates.
