Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones Leak: Enhanced Sound and Build

Sony has submitted details for the Sony WH-1000MX6 headphones, and it appears that they could improve on the current model, the Sony WH-1000MX5, in two major ways: how they are manufactured and how they sound.
The Walkman Blog noted the file with the US FCC, and while it doesn’t go into great detail, it does provide some fascinating details about Sony’s 2025 flagship over-ear headphones.
What new features will the Sony WH-1000XM6 have in 2025?
The WH-1000XM6 is described in the filing as a Wireless Noise Cancelling Stereo Headset, and it has the same battery voltage as the current model – though this does not necessarily imply the same amount of playtime, as the same voltage can deliver different milliamp-hours in different variants.
This time, the Bluetooth is Bluetooth 5.3 with Bluetooth LE, but it’s unclear whether that implies Bluetooth LE Audio or just a conventional low-energy connection for app control, etc. If it’s the former, it might also suggest Auracast support, which appears to be a popular feature in headphones this year.
One of the most noteworthy aspects in the file is what appears to be a modified hinge. That is not something we would generally be interested in, but we have received emails from readers whose XM5 headphones snapped at the hinge, and the fragility of that portion has been widely discussed in headphone forums and subreddits.
There is no hint of an official launch yet, but the FCC filing’s secrecy ends in July 2025, so a summer debut appears likely.
Despite their excellent performance, the Sony XM5 do not top our ranking of the best headphones in their respective categories – not because they are awful, but because the Sony WH-1000XM4 was so fantastic, is still available, and is now much cheaper. The XM5 came at a greater price and was not as ‘run out and upgrade’ friendly. Hopefully, Sony has some surprises for us with the 2025 model that will make it an obvious must-have purchase.
