How Apple Is Using AI to Transform Photo Editing

If you’ve used the Photos app on an iPhone or Mac, you already know it’s been more about basic fixes than anything groundbreaking. Crop, adjust lighting, maybe remove a small object. That’s it. But now, Apple Inc. is finally pushing beyond that, using AI to turn simple edits into something far more powerful.

Apple Photos App Overhaul Is Coming

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is preparing a major update to its Photos app across iPhone, iPad and Mac. The changes are expected to roll out with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 later this year.

At the centre of this shift is Apple’s broader AI push under its Apple Intelligence platform. The goal is simple. Make photo editing smarter, faster and far more capable without forcing users to rely on third-party apps.

New AI Tools: Extend, Enhance and Reframe

This important update will see a new dedicated section called “Apple Intelligence Tools” within the Photos app.

This is just where the real change starts. The Extend tool will allow users to take an image that is cropped down tightly and stretch it out, and have an AI-generated image extend what was originally held in the photo.

The Enhance tool will go beyond just filters, it will use artificial intelligence to make improvements in lighting, colour and picture quality that are much more advanced than what can be achieved with traditional editing tools.

Also included is the Reframe tool, which takes the enhancements even further than the Enhance tool by providing new opportunities to modify the composition of a photo after it has already been taken (e.g., modifying perspective and layout).

When used together, these three new tools will indicate that Apple is moving away from merely making corrections and is moving toward creating new content using artificial intelligence tools.

Why Apple Is Making This Move Now

This update is not coming out of nowhere. Apple is playing catch-up.

Rivals like Google and Samsung have already made AI photo editing a core part of their devices. Features like object removal, scene expansion and smart enhancements have gone from impressive extras to expected tools.

Apple, on the other hand, has taken a slower, more cautious approach. But as AI becomes a key part of everyday smartphone use, that gap has become harder to ignore.

Photo editing is one of the few places where users actually notice AI in action. It’s visual, immediate and personal. You don’t need to understand the tech to see the result.

That’s why this update matters. It’s not just about adding features. It’s about showing that Apple’s AI can compete where it counts.

The new tools suggest Apple is ready to move faster, even if everything isn’t perfectly polished yet. That’s a shift for a company known for holding back until features feel complete.

Photo Upgrade in Siri

The Photos upgrade is also expected to connect with a smarter version of Siri. The next-gen assistant is said to be more conversational and capable of handling multiple tasks in a single request.

That broader AI push matters, but Photos is where users will feel the difference first. Editing an image is something people do every day, and it’s the easiest way for Apple to prove its AI is actually useful.

Apple doesn’t just want to add AI. It wants people to rely on it.

With these changes, the company is turning one of its most-used apps into a showcase for what its AI platform can do. And for the first time in a while, it feels like Apple is not just refining the experience, but trying to catch up and compete.
