Samsung, Apple Top Global Smartphone Market; 310M Units Shipped In Q3 2024: Canalys
Apple’s domination continues in the premium smartphone segment, while brands like Samsung lead in entry-level models.
Canalys-global technology market analyst firm- has reported a steep 5 per cent year-on-year growth in global smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2024. The total number touched an astonishing 310 million units.
Smartphone makers Samsung and Apple have retained their top position from last year. While the South Korean company managed to ship 57.5 million units, the American tech giant dispatched 54.5 million units of smartphones.
“Apple achieved record Q3 shipments, driven by a strategic blend of channel and supply chain optimizations. Post-WWDC’s Apple Intelligence announcements, consumers are actively upgrading from older iPhone 12 and 13 models to embrace this new technology,” said Le Xuan Chiew, a Canalys analyst.
Apple’s shipment swelled in the third quarter of 2024 compared to that of the previous year, on the back of the iPhone 16 series. The company shipped nine more than the same quarter last year.
On the other hand, Samsung’s shipments went south by two per cent. However, that does not affect its top position with 19 per cent market share, followed by Apple close behind at 18 per cent.
Chinese developer Xiaomi shipped over 42.8 million units in Q3 2024 and sits in third place with a 14 per cent share in global smartphone market. Oppo and Vivo also achieved growth, with shipments growing by 8 per cent and 24 per cent, respectively.
There are increasing demands for smartphones in developing economies as the Asia-Pacific region witnessed a 10 per cent rise in smartphone sales, while the Chinese market swelled by 4 per cent.
However, growth remains dismal in North America and the Middle East.
Apple’s domination continues in the premium smartphone segment, while brands like Samsung lead in entry-level models.
The smartphone market is set to be abuzz in the upcoming festival season.
