How does Wi-Fi work on flights?

Internet connectivity in aircraft is mainly based on two technologies: Air-to-Ground (ATG) networks and satellite-based networks.
1. Air-to-Ground (ATG) Network
This technology involves the exchange of radio signals between the plane and the ground. Special telecom towers on the ground connect to the receiver on the plane and send internet signals. When the plane is in the air, this signal is constantly connected to the nearest tower. However, this system is not effective over the sea or in remote areas because there are no telecom towers there.
2. Satellite-based networks
In this network, the plane receives Internet signals directly from satellites installed in space. A special antenna installed on the plane connects to the satellite and exchanges data. This technology is more reliable because it provides internet connectivity even in areas with no network areas like forest, mountains and sea.

Satellite internet operates mainly through two types of satellites
1. Geostationary Satellites (GEO) – These satellites remain stationary relative to the Earth and provide a stable Internet connection to the aircraft.
2. Low-Earth Orbit Satellites (LEO) – These satellites orbit the Earth at a higher speed and provide faster Internet speeds.
Where does the signal come from?

In ATG systems, the Wi-Fi signal comes from telecom towers located on the ground, while in satellite systems, it is received directly from satellites. Some of the major satellite service providers include Inmarsat, Viasat and Starlink, which provides internet services worldwide for aviations.
How is Wi-Fi distributed on flights?

Special routers are installed in the cabin to distribute Wi-Fi inside the flight. These special routers spread the internet signal throughout the plane and allow passengers to connect to it from their mobile, laptop, or tablet. Usually, every passenger is given a password or login system for internet use, so only authorized people can access this facility.
